Watermelon baby pram

How to make a watermelon baby pram

Earlier this year I helped cater my friend’s baby shower. My friend loves fruit, can’t get enough of it, so I decided to make a super cute fruit-filled watermelon baby pram that I’d seen on Pinterest. It’s a fun way to encourage people to eat fruit as an alternative to the sweets and cakes served at a baby shower. Want to know how to make one yourself? Read on… First you cut out a section of the watermelon in a pram shape. Keep the section you cut away to make a handle from the rind. Obviously, you should cut the flesh away first to make it easier.

Next use a melon baller to make balls from the watermelon flesh. Do the same with a rockmelon. Mix the melon balls with grapes and fill the watermelon shell.

To make the baby’s head, cut a small hole in the orange and insert the pacifier. Add eyes by piercing halved grapes with half a toothpick and insert into the orange. For the wheels, take four orange slices and position them on the sides of the watermelon pram using toothpicks. Press halved grapes onto the outer end of the toothpick.

Attach the handle to the base using toothpicks.

Most people thought it was too cute to eat but once I convinced them it really didn’t take that long to make they were happy to tuck in. You can also get creative with watermelons to make cakes, baskets, sharks, pirate ships, dinosaur heads and more!

You will need:

  • 1 watermelon
  • 1 rockmelon or honeydew melon
  • 1 bunch of grapes (green and/or red)
  • 2 small oranges
  • 1 pacifier
  • toothpicks
  • sharp knife
  • platter
  • melon baller

Instructions

  1. Use a sharp knife to cut out a section of the watermelon in a pram shape. Keep the section you cut away and remove the flesh then use the knife to trace a 1 inch wide handle from the rind. Attach the handle to the base using toothpicks.
  2. Use a melon baller to make balls from the watermelon and rockmelon flesh.
  3. Mix the melon balls with grapes and fill the watermelon shell.
  4. To make the baby’s head, cut a small hole in the orange and insert the pacifier. Add eyes by piercing halved grapes with half a toothpick and insert into the orange. Place at the hood end of the pram on top of the fruit.
  5. For the wheels, cut four slices from an orange and position them on the sides of the watermelon pram using toothpicks. Press halved grapes onto the outer end of the toothpick as decoration.

Tips

  • Cut a thin slice from rind on the base of the watermelon so it won’t roll around.
  • Before cutting, use the tip of the knife to trace the line you will cut .
  • You can decorate the edges if you are feeling creative – scalloped (use a cookie cutter as a guide) or jagged – trace a line 1 inch from edge and cut small triangles from edge to the line.
  • Blend the excess watermelon flesh to make delicious watermelon juice.
